Caltech International FAQs

Q: As an international student, am I eligible for Financial Aid?

International students are not eligible for federal aid. However, Carleton works to meet 100% of every student's demonstrated financial need. We do accept a few international students every year whose financial need is met through a combination of grants, scholarships, and loans. Q: My documents are not in English. Do I need to translate my documents before sending them?

Yes, we need certified translations of your documents.

Q: The SAT tests are not available in my country, what should I do?

We will waive this requirement for students in this situation. Let us know by email or letter that this is the case for you.

Q: I cannot submit a "guidance counselor" recommendation because my school does not have a position like that. What should I do?

A recommendation from a school official or principal is acceptable if you do not have a guidance counselor.

Q: Is an interview required for international applicants

No, interviews are not required in any way for admission.

Q: How could I contact current international students at Carleton?

Our international student web site contains a link which will give you a list of Carleton international students who would love to talk with you.

Q: Can you give me an idea of preferred scores for TOEFL and IELTS exams?

We have found that students with scores in these ranges are best-prepared to study and learn at Carleton College:

PBT (paper based TOEFL): 600 and above

IBT (internet based TOEFL): 100 and above

CPT (computer based TOEFL): 250 and above

IELTS: 7.0 and above

Q: Can international students defer their entry to Carleton for a year?

Yes, but this needs to be requested in writing from our Dean of Admissions and a proposed plan for the year (not enrollment at another institution) is also needed.

Q: I live outside the U.S. Can I send admission documents by fax or email?

Yes, you may fax them to 507-222-4526 or email admissionsglobal@carleton.edu Remember that school transcripts and test scores need to be sent by a school official.

Q: As an international student, will I have a better chance of being admitted if I offer to pay for my first year and apply for financial aid after I have been admitted?

We ask students to provide a budget for all four years of attendance at the time of the initial application. If you have not applied for financial assistance as a freshman it is not typically possible to apply for it in another year.

Q: I'm from another country. Can I work to help pay for my education? Do I need a social security number?

Yes, if you receive financial assistance from Carleton College part of that aid will come from your on-campus employment. A social security number is not required for non-U.S. students.

Q: The school system in my country doesn't calculate GPA. What should I do?

We know that GPA (grade point average) is not used in many non-US schools so this question may be left blank on your application. It would be helpful if your school official or counselor could submit the “International Supplement” from the Common Application which explains grading and curriculum in your school.
